Mac had woken from his sleep and clearly wasn’t a fan of the cage he was in. Sharp claws ripped at the sides, and the more he realized it wasn’t helping, the louder he protested.

“Shit,” Foster said, an edge of panic in his voice. He scratched his beard while looking to me for answers. “What now? I’m not letting him out in case he nicks me again.”

I couldn’t help laughing. There wasn’t anything sinister going on with Mac, even though he acted all crazy. “Well, it could be one of two things. Either he needs to go to the bathroom, or he’s hungry.”

“Yeah, that makes sense.” Relief flickered over his handsome features. “See why you need to move in? I couldn’t handle MacCat by myself.”

So that’s the main reason he asked me to stay?

I hid my disappointment and avoided his gaze by busying myself with letting Mac out of the cage. “His name is just Mac,” I said in a somewhat frosty tone as I stroked the white fluff-ball.

“Oh, sorry. I knew it was Mac-something.”

Actually, his version of the cat’s name was cute, and I was already regretting my bitchy tone. What did I expect? At least he was being honest. I was doing much worse. I’d accepted because that would give me so many more opportunities to snoop around.

Okay, I lied.

There was a second reason I said yes so quickly. Being around Foster was addictive and I was of two minds whenever he left—part of me grateful for the opportunity to be alone so I could look for clues, and the other part missing his presence. It just didn’t feel the same around the mansion when he wasn’t there. He injected a kind of charisma and unique energy into the place that brought it to life, and that was why I loved being there—with him.

Mac purred in my arms as I held him close.

“How do you do that? Mac fucking loves you.” The awe in his eyes made me happy.

I shrugged and gave him a small smile. “Just call me the cat whisperer.”

Foster’s arms came around me from behind. He kissed the tops of my shoulders. “Hmmm… and the cock whisperer too. You have many talents, Ms. James.”

I had an idea where this was going, but I wanted Foster to work for it.

“Let’s feed Mac,” I said, wiggling free from his embrace and carrying the cat to the kitchen.

Foster followed with a groan. “The damn pussy always comes first.”

I threw back my head and laughed. Did Foster realize what he just said? His brows knitted for a few seconds before he got it. “Fuck, that’s so true, isn’t it?” He licked his lips, eye-fucking me at the same time.

“Only if you’re a real gentleman, which you are.”

I reached for the tin of cat food, aware that his gaze followed me. It wasn’t just any brand either; it was the gourmet stuff from the top shelf with fancy ingredients. Lucky Mac. As much as Foster insisted he didn’t like animals and vice versa, he didn’t fool me.
